April Sun in Cuba by Dragon is a classic from 1977 that most New Zealanders and Aussies have heard. Written by Marc Hunter and Paul Hewson, it's a great song full of energy that you'd hear played at most cover band pub gigs in New Zealand. It's a song that screams out summer, good times and times gone by! We love it and when we play it at gigs it always fills the dancefloor. This song has a special place in the heart of Kiwis because it was a song written by a great kiwi band called Dragon! They're famous for other hits such as Rain, Are you old enough & Still in love with you. We wonder how many people from around the world have heard this song? Dragon are a New Zealand rock band which was formed in Auckland in January 1972, and, from 1975, based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The band was originally fronted by singer Graeme Collins, but rose to fame with singer Marc Hunter and is currently led by his brother, bass player and co-founder Todd Hunter. Their name "Dragon" came from a consultation of I Ching cards by Collins. The group performed, and released material, under the name Hunter in Europe and the United States during 1987. Here's 'Be Mine Tonight' by Th' Dudes from 1979! It's our second kiwi classic cover for NZ Music Month of May.. It's another song that goes down a treat at our gigs.. With just over 5 mins of run time this song is from an era outside the 3 min 10 sec formula of todays pop songs... we love it.. catch vocal melody with some harmonies, nice groove, great lead guitar and a massive old fashioned break down towards the end that builds back up into an awesome outro solo!! We hope we've done it justice and you guys overseas like hearing a bit of Kiwi musical history! 'Be Mine Tonight' is the debut single by New Zealand band Th' Dudes. It was released in May 1979 as a double A-side with Walking in Light and reached No. 36 on the New Zealand charts. It won Single of the Year at the 1979 New Zealand Music Awards and was voted 27th best New Zealand Song of the 20th Century by APRA members. Written by Freddie Mercury in 1979, the track is included on their 1980 album The Game, and also appears on the band's compilation album Greatest Hits in 1981. The song peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart in 1979 and became the group's first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US in 1980, remaining there for four consecutive weeks.
